More About Fire Walls
If you read my last blog you will know that no one has a hackles computer. Most modern virus makers, hackers, spyware, and adware distributors are nothing more than high-tech punks trying to be cool. Most countries have lawmakers who understand virtually nothing about technology. This makes it virtually imposable to write laws prohibiting bad things to happen to you the individual via your computer. All this however is a rant for a different day.
What we need to do today is educate you the individual on how to protect yourself from the high-tech punks. Even though every computer is hackable it does not take much to make hacking it undesirable. Most hackers want the quick hack. When a firewall is found the hacker usually goes onto the next target. You might be wondering what a firewall is, and I will explain.
A firewall can be a piece of hardware, or software that blocks others from entering a network, or standalone PC. Having a firewall at all is good, but a hardware firewall is always best. When you use a software firewall it stops hackers, but since the software is loaded on your computer that means a hacker has accessed your computer in order to be stopped. With a hardware firewall a hacker gets stopped before entering your network.
Software Firewall
Symantec, Mcafee, Trend Micro, and Zone Labs are just some of the software firewall manufacturers out on the open market. These four are also the most trusted of all the manufacturers on the open market. Be careful of other so-called software firewalls. There are a growing number of software vendors who claim they are keeping your system safe. In reality there are a lot of fly by night companies that make so called fire walls and actually leave a back door open for themselves.
Hardware Firewall
Hardware firewalls are a better solution. Expect to pay a little bit more for a hardware firewall, but it is well worth it. A good one for the home will cost you about $150.00. Small office about $500.00, and for medium to large companies you will be looking in the thousands. Insure that you follow the directions on instillation of your hardware firewall and reset the password as soon as possible. Most hardware firewalls come with a default password that is posted on the Internet within hours of the equipment hitting the market.
