That Damn PC: Hardware, Software, Virus, Malware, PC Troubleshooting,

Avoid being Phished

by Kiven on February 9th, 2007

I overheard a office colleague of mine saying that he was wondering why his bank was sending him an email message stating that his account is compromised and he needs to login to check his account. Luckily, i was there to stop him from entering information on the site as i smelled a phish, or more correctly a phishing lure. Sure enough, viewing detailed email headers show a different host and a simple view source code showed that the alleged bank website is a mirror copy of the authentic one.

If you receive any email asking you to check your bank/ebay/yahoo/gmail/paypal account for whatever reason by clicking on a link in the email, DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK. Clicking on the link given in the email may compromise your account. If you do NEED to check your account, TYPE IN THE ADDRESS MANUALLY on your favorite web browser.
