Run a “Guest” OS on your PC

It’s hard to find the perfect operating system for your PC. Windows isn’t the safest OS, but it probably runs all of your programs and games. Linux is much less vulnerable to the Internet’s threats, but it doesn’t natively support Windows applications. So what is a guy to do?

Killing Smitfraud redux

As part of becoming familiar with ThatDamnPC, I’ve been reading the rich repository of articles published here. Last week, I read Aaron Brazell’s article, “Killing Smitfraud” and tried to download a linked zipfile mentioned.
Immediately, my NOD32 antivirus, anitspyware system flashed a large red popup warning about a possibly dangerous file. Concerned, […]

How To Create a Windows XP Boot Disk

Windows 98 served one good purpose: boot disks. The boot disks serve great purposes even today but sometimes you need to have a boot disk that will understand the Windows XP filesystem in a way that the Windows 98 boot disk did not. While it was a point and click operation in Windows […]

Replacing Hardware in Computers

Fixing OrgChart Errors in Office 2003

There’s a nice little bug (I call it a bug anyway) that prevents users who have Powerpoint presentations created in Popwerpoint 2000 or below that contain Org Chart objects from being able to edit the org charts in Powerpoint 2003.
The error message was: The Microsoft Organizational Chart server application can’t be found. Please contact […]

Disabling Those Annoying Balloon Popups

You know what I’m talking about… Those baloon messages that Windows kicks out at you from the area of your taskbar that get in the way of what you’re trying to do.
Here’s how to nuke those suckers for good.

Open Your Registry Editor (regedit)
Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\
Add a new DWORD entry called EnableBaloonTips
The Value should […]

Mapping a Network Drive

Accessing Network shares in a networked environment is common place. Often groups of people need to be able to access the same files and resources simultaneously so a server admin might designate a portion of a server as a network share.
In Windows, you can access this network share by typing the sharepoint into the […]

Renaming the Recycle Bin

If you’re familiar with Mac OS X, you know that the equivalent of the Windows XP Recycle Bin is the Trash Can. You can actually duplicate this on Windows.
By editing your registry (regedit from Start > Run), modify the following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/CLSID/{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
Change the {default} entry from “Recycle Bin” to “Trash Can”.
