That Damn PC: Hardware, Software, Virus, Malware, PC Troubleshooting,

customizing Firefox: themes, extensions, toolbars, about:config

by Mary Ford on October 31st, 2006

Firefox 2

I love Firefox 2.0! Lifehacker (motto: ‘don’t live to geek;geek to live’) offers a short list of hacks you can make to your about:config file and tells you how to Keep track of the latest Firefox developments; Firefox Help and Tips lists 2.0 sites as well. (Go here for more Lifehacker Firefox stories)
I’ve been adding in Firefox extensions as they become compatible and even forced a few incompatible extensions to work with Firefox 2.0. (I did it the easy way: use Mr Tech’s Local Install Extension, but be careful. I install one extension at a time. restart Firefox, test, and uninstall if it doesn’t work.) Here’s a list of the extensons (screen captures) I’ve installed. Red extensions are not compatible yet (I disabled those). Greyed extensions are uninstalled.

My favorites extensions include:

Scrapbook, ResizR, MR Tech Local Install (local install power tools for all users), Unplug, Linky, Performancing, About This Site (get the real lowdown on the site you are visiting), Copy Plain Text, Del.licio.us, Adblock Plus with Filterset.G,Ted Rheinhold’s Who Is This Person (Research a person by searching their name against relevant websites.)

I disabled Xinha Here — it’s supposed to work with Firefox 2.0 and I also disabled Live Writerfox: it too is supposed to work with Firefox. Microsoft’s Windows LiveWriter is supposed to be the bomb for blogging, but I couldn’t make it work w. Firefox.

All LiveWriter did for me was crash. Maybe it’s because I’m using ‘DropMyRights, (a free program from Microsoft to limit a program’s rights), with Firefox. Microsoft’s LiveWriter doesn’t seem to know how to handle that customization. (gotta get those Live Writer programmers talking with Microsoft’s ‘DropMyRights’ programmers; the two programs seem incompatible.)

I also use RoboForm2Go; it’s quirky, and does not behave like other extensions at all. I recommend it for its utility: keeping your passwords organized and safeguarded.

Firefox extensions have made it the premier browser on the web. You’ll find most of these extensions at Mozilla’s home. If you can’t find one, let me know. Thanks.

Have I missed an invaluable extension? What are yours? Comments welcome.
