Dell Laptop Battery Recall

by on August 15th, 2006

I always said Dell made crappy laptops. No one believed me. Maybe now they will as they have announced a recall on a slew of Latitude, Inspiron, XPS and Precision laptops.

“…Please note that only the described battery packs are subject to this recall and not the notebook computers themselves…”
    Quoted from here: https://www.dellbatteryprogram.com/

    Just to clarify…

Thanks, Sean! Dell laptops still suck. :D

Hm… aren’t they recalled because of a Sony battery potentially setting them on fire ? I thought that’s what I read.

Yes. True. But Ford caugh heat over Firestone tires. A company is responsible for the parts they use. :)

I just recently retired a Dell laptop that was less than two years old and had about 3,000 operating hours on it. I retired it because I wanted a new one, not because there was anything wrong with it.

Conversely, I am on my third Toshiba and second Panasonic here at work since September of 2003. The previous models of these actually broke in some fashion with only a fraction of the hours of my Dell.

I’m on my second Dell at home now and after several months it’s still behaving perfectly (largely because it runs Linux, granted).

Since I actually use Dells and use them hard, I can assure you that Dell most certainly does NOT make crappy laptops. I wouldn’t buy any other brand.

Oh, but thanks for the tip on the recall. Gotta check my Inspiron 9400 battery when I get home.

Oh yeah, I agree with the fact that a company is definitely responsible for the parts they use. I was just arguing on semantics that they don’t actually “make” the defective battery ;-)

I have 3 dell laptops and none of them have given me any problems. I think Dell support (over the phone) sucks because you can hear the person flipping pages, and I think not being able to have copies of the software they install on the systems (instead of a ghosted image of the original installation) is not cool because you basically wipe the hard drive clean.

But overall I am please with my Dell laptops. They are more reliable than some of the friendships I have had that’s for sure.
