Free Software To Help You Surf Safely
Today I discovered a free software site that helps you to use the Internet securely.
Site Advisor, a part of McAfee’s offerings of security software, is software that analizes web sites, downloads and web submission forms to insure that you may visit these sites without the worry of being infected by Malware or Viruses.
With a Top 5 rating from C-Net’s Download.com, Site Advisor will work with Windows Internet Explorer as well as Firefox 1.5+ running on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
How does SiteAdvisor test sites?
SiteAdvisor’s engineers built a system of automated robots to test every Web site, download, and e-mail sign-up form on the Web.
Web sites are tested for excessive pop-ups and other annoyances. So far we’ve tested sites representing more than 95% of worldwide Web traffic.Web sites are tested for excessive pop-ups and other annoyances. So far we’ve tested sites representing more than 95% of worldwide Web traffic.
Downloads are tested for viruses and bundled adware, spyware or other unwanted programs. We’ve tested more than 700,000 to date.
Sign-up forms are completed using a one-time use e-mail address so any subsequent spam can be tracked. Our bots receive mail from more than one million places already.
Site Advisor was founded in April, 2005 by a group of engineers from MIT who were sick and tired of spending weekends cleaning up their home computers. It was aquired by McAfee on April 5, 2006 which is enabling “greatly expanded worldwide reach, access to McAfee’s leading security technology, and greater resources to accelerate feature development for our many users.”
If you are looking for a way to improve the security of your web experience, this is one of the better offerings I have seen.
