The CD ‘participation kit’ includes a mouth swab you send in to Genebase for analysis. “You can trace the ancient migration paths of your ancestors and discover the roots of your surname. You can even match yourself and other family members to famous people, like Genghis Khan and Marie Antoinette.”
Just in case you can’t justify the expense, you can register Now (It’s free!) to delve into “the world’s most powerful genealogy, research, and activity tool. The project encourages people to participate ‘online.’ Features include an interactive map, ancestry genealogy and ‘real time geographical overviews of how your markers compare to markers from different parts of the world.’ Kit prices range from $119 to $318 US.
Prediction: Privacy experts will howl at this one: just think of the implications. Get a mouth swab from your children so you can prove they are yours (or not). How many ways can this kit be misused? Can it identify the diseases your genes make you prone to? Is this information really secured by Genetic Genealogy’s website? And, you gotta ask yourself: what else are they testing for? Can your mouth swab data, once it’s stored in the Genetic Genealogy datbase, be used against you, in future crime investigations? Maybe these questions have been answered and I have nothing to worry about.
