Overclocking the Phenom 9600

by Kiven on January 24th, 2008

AMD’s industry position is a precarious one; they got beaten by Intel the past 2 years with the Core 2 Duo processor and got trounced on the graphics card front by Nvidia with their superb 8xxx series. But Extremetech writes: “AMD might be down, but it’s certainly not out. Though delays and lackluster performance have been plaguing its latest line of desktop products, the Phenom CPUs, surfing message boards reveals that there’s still a contingent of AMD fans willing to stick with the company through its extended period of woe.”

We’ve already slapped the Phenom 9600 vs. an Intel Core 2 Quad and the Phenom didn’t do so well. That got us thinking…would the AMD chip fare better if we cranked up the frequency? Would it allow much in terms of overclocking at all?

We tossed together an AMD-based system, complete with an ATI Radeon HD 3870 graphics card, and attacked it through the BIOS setup program of its ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe motherboard. What would the system show in terms of gains? How’s the heat with a well-regarded air cooler (the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro)? Can we make this CPU worth building a Spider platform system based upon it?
