weird: there’s a parallel universe of the web ON the web
Microsoft started a blog for its Strider Research team, to blog its Strider Research effort, which seeks to undo the damage caused by companies which buy up domains, based on typos. Looks like the team’s blog started on August 5 and died on August 5, 2006. (gosh, another short-lived blog.)
The second article is absolutely fascinating: it says that someone is building a parallel universe of the web ON the web, by exploiting search typos, mispelled words in search engine searches. It’s purpose: to fool us into thinking we are somewhere when we are somewhere else on the web. Trust the web without guidance, and you may fall into one of these black holes…. and not be where you intended to be.
“… So it looks like somebody is building a parallel universe of the web in the IP range of 80.77.85.nnn - 80.77.92.nnn. [A SEO Parallel Universe, Strider]
That all seems kinda useless, until you realize the potential for fraud and for doubling up on payments for Search Engine Placements. Could it really be that ThatdamnPC.com and every other site may someday have an evil twin? No wonder the web is growing exponentially.
And if that makes you shudder, consider this: it’s not so easy to surf anonymously anymore. Not that you’d care, unless the history is used to find out who you are, what you do, and grab your private information.
